The small village of Oregon is currently made up of about 50 homes. It took 300 years for the village to grow to that size. A newly proposed development threatens to increase the number of homes more than 10 times – to 550 homes. Such a sprawling medley of apartments, houses, stores, restaurants and a hotel will forever alter this small rural village. It simply is not in keeping with the rural growth strategy laid out by Lancaster County planners!

Citizen outcry about this development got the attention of elected officials, and the Manheim Township commissioners rejected it in a unanimous vote on Jan. 23, 2017. The developer has returned with a new proposal.

Click between the original design which was unanimously rejected and compare it to the new "redesigned" proposal which is very similar (left).

This project as proposed would...
• completely overwhelm and alter the rural character of small Oregon Village
•  add hundreds of cars and thousands of trips on already congested corridors such as routes 222, 272 and 30
• require 3 new traffic signals on Oregon Pike and widening of roadways
• develop land directly adjoining LITITZ RUN, a class 1A TROUT stream previously restored with tax dollars
• spill traffic onto nearby small back roads
• endanger Old Order Amish who travel in buggies and farm this region
• add 330 students to the school population requiring a new elementary school costing 35$ million
• open the entire Rt. 272 corridor to more new development
NOW THE DEVELOPERS HAVE CIRCLED BACK!

The new proposed plan changed very little from the first, and still poses the same threat to the Oregon Village. Traffic congestion, added school costs and negative impacts on farming communities are only a few of the major concerns. There is a December 19th meeting at Manheim Township municipal building where the planning commission will vote on recommendation.
